行動経済学者のダン・アリエリー教授は、イギリスの新聞紙『Economist』のとある広告に疑問を持っていました。その広告とは、web版、もしくは新聞の定期購読を申し込むものだったのですが、このようなおかしな選択肢でした。

* web版の定期購読。年間59ドル。
* 新聞の定期購読。年間125ドル。
* webと新聞の定期購読。年間125ドル。

本来なら真ん中の選択肢は必要ありませんね？　マサチューセッツ工科大学（MIT）の学生100人に対して「どちらを選ぶか？」という実験を行ったところ、次のような結果となり、やはり真ん中を選ぶ人はいませんでした。

* web版の定期購読。年間59ドル。（16％）
* 新聞の定期購読。年間125ドル。（0％）
* webと新聞の定期購読。年間125ドル。（84％）

しかし、ここから不必要に思える真ん中の選択肢を取り除き、MITの別の学生100人に対して同じ質問をしたところ、結果は次のように変化しました。

* web版の定期購読。年間59ドル。（68％）
* webと新聞の定期購読。年間125ドル。（32％）

不必要な選択肢を取り除いただけなのに、人気がなかったはずのweb版を希望する人の割合は16％から68％に増加し、一番人気だったはずのwebと新聞の定期購読は84％から32％に減少したのです。つまり、真ん中の「新聞の定期購読」は「誰も選ばない」選択肢ではありましたが、不必要な選択肢ではなかった。値段の高い方を魅力的に見せるために必要な選択肢だったことが分かります。
